Scholarship applications can be exceedingly complicated and confusing. Not only does each scholarship body have distinct requirements, but none of them appear to set deadlines for the same week, which will undoubtedly confuse you even more! When applying to college, it can feel like you’re going round in circles, attempting to complete duties you’ve already begun yet seemingly getting nowhere. It can be a pain just to complete one college application, let alone numerous for scholarships. However, aid is at hand, and you can make things easier for yourself with these simple tips:
Read each application carefully.
Every scholarship requires something different because no two are alike, therefore you cannot simply fill out one form for each and hope to be successful. It does not operate that way. There will always be something different expected of you, whether your personal statement has a word limit or you have fewer letters of recommendation. If you do not read it and follow the guidelines, your application will be deleted immediately.
Prepare ahead of time.
Before you start researching scholarships in depth, you should practice writing your personal statement. Style is highly crucial, so plan it out the summer before you apply to ensure that you get it exactly right. If a personal statement reflects you, it is ideal for your application. Keep a copy of the draft you created and use it as a foundation for your actual personal statements when applying for positions.
Work with the space you have.
Try not to utilize continuation sheets on scholarship applications because representatives or assessors may become bored halfway through. Try to keep all information to a minimal while including as many activities as possible on your list. If you’re short on space, you might even include a few in your personal statement. However, if you don’t have enough space, leave out the ones that aren’t necessary, and prepare ahead of time because there’s nothing worse than Tipp-ex on an application.
Check out what they desire.
You should constantly consider what the scholarship sponsor is asking for and give them what they want. Never lie on an application form, but instead use your own personality attributes to your advantage. If they are searching for someone with character, make it clear in your writing style. If they are looking for honesty, provide an example of it. Always back up your claims by tailoring what you know about yourself to what they’re looking for in you!
Always explain why you wish to study a given subject.
Many people fail at this step because they do not defend their reasons for wanting to study a particular subject. There must be a basis for your decision, but failing to explain it or present your arguments in a logical and well-reasoned manner can lead to your failure at the final hurdle!
Read it thoroughly.
Never submit an application for a scholarship without first reading it. Make sure you’ve conveyed all you want to say in a clear, concise, but logical manner so it’s easy to read. If it passes your critical eye, I should pass theirs!
